Our Story

Starting in 2015, and prior to the creation of Shirikiana as a registered charity in 2022, the work of providing support to the Mukuru Academy has been conducted on a personal basis by Dean through many teaching and relationship building visits and through focused financial support – the latter being made possible through various fundraising activities as well as through the generosity of a small dedicated team of individual donors.

In partnership with the academy’s headmaster, Enock Nyananga, funds have been raised to enable a variety of particular projects and initiatives with the intention of furnishing the academy with the necessary facilities for it to function as a safe and effective educational establishment.

During his visits to Mukuru, Dean helped to facilitate music and mathematics classes and was able to involve the pupils in the composition of a school song - ‘In Mukuru’.

In other schools across Kenya (in both urban and rural areas) Dean was able to make donations of musical instruments and art equipment, participate in school activities, give tuition, discuss principles of education with the directors of the schools
and forge links with schools he has worked with and been part of in the UK.

So far, Dean, and subsequently Shirikiana, have funded the following incredible and life-changing upgrades to the project:

- Repairs to the walls and the roof of the school building.
- The refurbishment of a classroom floor.
- The improvement of toilet facilities.
- The purchase of land for the building of two new rooms.
- Fans for classroom ventilation.
- ‘Porta-loos’ within the school premises.
- A drinking water dispenser and a clean water dispenser for hand washing.
- The adaptation of waste land to serve as a football pitch.
- Basic classroom materials i.e. books, journals, pens and paper.
- The purchase of a camera, a printer, a laptop computer and a mic and PA system.
- School uniforms for the poorer students.
- Football equipment i.e. shirts, nets, boots and balls.
- The supplementing of the students’ one basic daily meal.
- School fees for students who would otherwise be financially prohibited from attending the school.
- Support for the urgent welfare needs of poorer families (by private donations).
- Sponsorship for select students to progress to higher education.
- Repairs to the classroom roofing.
- Drainage of sewers and repairs to the pit latrines.
- The purchase of a small plot of land adjacent to the primary school.
- The construction of a one-story building to house the new Secondary school.
